Unlike their female counterparts, male models enjoy a greater degree of flexibility in their careers. While most female fashion models are out of work by the time they're 25, male models can work steadily from the age of 15 into their fifties. Each male model can use a vast range of styles for photo shoots, ranging from a buttoned down business man with a crew cut to an unshaven surfer with hair down to his shoulders. He can be a tattooed punk at a skate park or a young grandfather relaxing at home. This level of freedom is attracting more men to the industry. There are a few things you should consider before you pack up your bags and head to New York or LA, according to the Association of Model Agents:

* 15 to 25 is considered the "young men's" market, though if you can photograph older or younger the age range isn't set in stone.
* 25 to 35 is the "adult men's" market, and this is where the majority of male model casting comes from, unlike female modeling.
* Most professional male models are between 5'10" and 6'2". Unlike female models, being of average height or slightly above is a benefit.
* Most professional male models weigh between 140 and 165 pounds, though this can vary depending on where you fit on a Body Mass Index.
* The average measurements of a professional male model range from 40 regular to 42 long.

If you fall within those basic parameters you will find it easier to get work off the bat. But don't despair if you're too tall, too lanky, too wide, or weigh to little or too much; the male modelling marketing is expanding rapidly, and niches are being created all the time.

Male models sometimes find themselves in a more difficult position physically than female models, but with healthier results. Until very recently, female models were often expected to maintain unrealistic body shapes and levels of slimness that has led to widespread problems with eating disorders and self-image problems. Male models, on the other hand, are expected to look healthy. Extremely healthy. The ideal male fashions model is slim, but not too thin, muscular, but not too bulky, with a nice triangular torso. Aside from the covers of body-building magazines, you won't find much demand for Mr. Universe level muscles. Male models are, however, expected to be in peak physical condition, and have excellent muscle tone all over their bodies.

If you're gearing up to be a male model, it's a good idea to join a gym and hire a personal trainer. Achieving the right balance of diet and exercise to achieve an optimal muscle tone can be very difficult. Career casting male models might find themselves spending more time working out that walking the runway. On the plus-side, body shape and definition are more important to casting directors than a particular face type. If you've got a well-sculpted body, you can probably find work, and male models with distinctive "looks" do very well for themselves.

Male fashions models enjoy a great deal of flexibility with the kind of photo shoots and advertisements they can do. A man can have salt and pepper hair to play a business executive in one shoot and then dye it to play a toned body guard in another. Hair style is always variable, and length tends to cater to the most current fashion. Overall strength, warmth, confidence, and distinction are valued as "looks" for male models.

When sending off your first portfolio to a modelling agent, there are a few things to include. Make sure you have a standard headshot. Given the emphasis on body in male modeling, you'll need multiple full body shots. Have one full body shot in shorts or underwear and a tank top. Have another in casual clothing, like a T-shirt and jeans. And have a third shot in business casual wear or a full-blown suit.

With a few months in the gym, a confident smile, and a knack for being in front of the camera you could be a few steps away from becoming a professional male model.

Grenadian Male Casting Models Wins The Face of Caribbean Fashions Agencies Competition

St. Georges, Grenada - Grenada has everything to be proud of as it relates to fashion as Kishawn Thomas for the second time for this year won another illustrious title, ‘The Face of Caribbean Fashion Competition. Shereen Davis from Jamaica won the female aspect of the competition.

The competition was produced by Imperial Fashion Production in New York and was held for the first time where all the participating models had a total of six photographs adjudicated.

The photo request was segmented into two main categories for judging…it included promotional or commercial shots and adventure. The judge’s criteria included poise, eye contact, comfort, fashion presence and personality.

The competition commenced on August 1st and ended on August 24th and participants from around the region were invited to register to enter the competition by submitting six photographs of themselves (three original and three edited) model/photo shoot type.

Over 100 models participated in the competition and according to Director Charlene White the turn out could have been better. “We are a brand new modeling company with Caribbean oriented workers and with limited resources we decided to put on this competition just to get an insight as to what the Caribbean has to offer with regards to fashions and models”.

Ms. White said the process in getting models to submit photos was “quiet a tedious one”. She noted that a number of Caribbean casting agencies and models were contacted to be part of the competition which at the end saw a male and female winner.

“The response was overwhelming in some quotas, but as we develop our data base during the next few months for next year’s competition we expect more models to register”, she said. Ms. White, a Jamaican national who traveled extensively to a number of the Caribbean countries says it is evident that “the region has a flair for fashion but what is lacking most is the opportunity for one to express themselves and what we would endeavour to do here at Imperial is to help break the ice”.

The 2009 winners according to Ms. White would both receive a cash prize, an all expense paid trip to Jamaica and a modeling contract with Imperial Fashion Company for one year. The female winner will also receive a one year supply of cosmetics compliments Revlon, while the male winner would receive a one month voucher for designer clothing and accessories from Dolce & Gabbana.

They will both select a fashions designer of their choice to work with one year. Imperial Fashion Company will also undertake a photo shoot with both winners commencing during the month of September.

The models will also be engaged in a number of Caribbean promotional activities in the country in which they reside and are tasked to work with a charitable institution of their choice.

“We have noticed the trend in our male youths today and we decided from this competition to place much emphasis on the males, therefore we would be doing a lot work with our Grenadian male winner with respect to positive anti-drug and violence campaigns by using his fashion image”.

Kishawn Thomas who is currently residing on the island of Nevis in 2008 won the first ever Mr. Renaissance Man International and in June 2009 captured the Mr. Caribbean Top Model competition in the BVI. He also modeled for a number of regional and international designers.

“Kishawn’s pictures were just great; he had the majority of what the judges we looking for in a model. He is a pure example of showing other male models that you don’t have to be muscular in order to win a competition; we see him doing well in the future and wish him all the best”, said Ms. White.

“I have had the chance of working with him in the past and he is a great young man, very intelligent and is always self motivated”.

Ms. White said as her company intends to develop a strong relationship with the region and the first major assignment would be that of Caribbean model search in 2010 followed by a search for casting agencies as to assist them in creating more fashion oriented events.

I still bear the emotional scars from my first fall fashion faux pas. Mom sent me to school on the first day of Grade 2 with thick, corduroy, "wine-coloured" pants. Rubbing against each other as I walked up to the school playground, the treacherous corduroy pant legs gave me away with their unique sound as I tried to sneak past the milling kids. They sounded like a bugle heralding the arrival of the chosen one--the Fashion Outcast.

Mom had bought me the worst pair of pants this side of clowndom, and the teasing was nonstop. So you can forgive me if the mention of fall fashion still gives me a bit of a chill. But the School of Hard Knocks teaches important lessons, including the value of paying attention to fall fashions trends.

So what are this year's trends for men? I spoke to buyers at some of the top famous men stores in Calgary to get the latest local buzz, and delved into the fall style magazines to see what's going to be hot internationally.

In general, famous men clothing is being cut a little trimmer and shorter this fall, according to Jordan Singer, the buyer for Henry Singer Fashion Group. This is good news for all of us who have been active this summer, and yet another motivator for those who haven't.

Layering is hot, which is great for the stylish man who lives in a city with violent weather swings. (That's you. Or with a few new duds, it could be you.) A trendy prep look for this fall is a heavy-knit cardigan or vest over an argyle sport shirt and a plain T-shirt. Another fashionable top layer is a peacoat.

As for colours, the usual fall focus on greys and dark colours still stands, especially for suits. But the plain denim look is making a comeback. Plaid is also back in a big way, from gingham to buffalo patterns. It seems every men's fashions line includes plaid clothing this fall.

"Plaid is king," says Nathan Newman, the buyer for Bloke Clothing. This fashion takeover is making it cool to mix backwoods with hipster, blue collar with couture. An insulated red lumberjack plaid vest layers surprisingly well over a grey cardigan sweater and sport shirt. (Hey, if it was good enough for a young Marlon Brando . . .)

On warm autumn days, a T-shirt with a funky print is great casual wear. But leave the skull-themed T-shirt at home unless you're planning to join a biker gang. Instead, pick up a new T-shirt that expresses your style. Leather isn't going to reign in this fall's outerwear like it has in the past few years.

Men's health magazine fall style guide points to five other fashion trends to note as you update your wardrobe:

1. The double-breasted suit: You want this to look sleek, not bulky like those power suits that ruled in the '80s.

2. Thick knits: Think, chunky cardigan or shawl-collar knit sweater. Pick a vertical-knit pattern to trim your silhouette. And match the sweater with flat-front dress pants or a casual five-pocket style in denim, moleskin or (careful here) corduroy.

3. Modern prep: The preppy look will always come back into style, as it has this fall. Mix a sleek cardigan and checked shirt with a roughed-up pair of jeans. Loosen your tie and add sneakers to look more casual.

4. Belted coats:A belt gives last fall's outerwear an economical update this fall. Think trench coat, belted leather car coat or wool topcoat. Don't wear too many layers underneath, or the belt will exaggerate the bulk.

5. Long scarves: Elegance and function merge in this accessory. Pair it with an unadorned jacket or wool overcoat. The longer the scarf, the simpler the pattern should be. Stick with neutral colours such as grey, black or white. And don't tie a big scarf: just loop it loosely around your neck.

In 2006, Sean O'Pry was like any other 17-year-old kid, attending high school in Kennesaw, Ga., and tinkering with his MySpace page in his spare time. What was not so normal was what happened after the photos on O'Pry's page caught the attention of New York fashion modeling agency VNY Models. VNY owner Lana Winters personally phoned O'Pry's mother to get her permission to fly Sean to the Big Apple, and within three days he had landed a major ad campaign.

"He came here with a little suitcase, not knowing what to expect and basically became a star overnight," says Winters. "I've been in this business for a very, very long time and I've never seen anybody get such a response."

In the two-and-a-half years since, the now 19-year-old O'Pry has nabbed some of the most prized campaigns for designers from Calvin Klein to Armani and was named GQ Style's 2007 "Man for the Season." All that acclaim makes O'Pry Forbes' most successful male model this year.

To compile our rankings, we looked at the most prominent male models' work over the past two years, counting magazine covers and spreads, advertising campaigns, contracts and runway shows.

O'Pry's success makes for a great story, but it's the exception to the rule in the female-dominated world of high fashion. A top male model may take home anywhere from $200,000 to $500,000 annually, but most make a less glamorous living from catalog work. Now, thanks to the recession, advertisers are shortening photo shoots and renewing older contracts to save money. They're also narrowing the types of men they feature.

"In times of economic downturn, there's an automatic reversal to a more classic look," says Gene Kogan, co-director of the men's division at DNA Model Management. "During those times, clients, designers and department stores need to speak directly to the consumers."

WE all make fashion errors now and again, but some fashion mistakes made by men model are just unforgivable. Outlined here are some fashion mistakes to avoid at all costs:

wearing socks with sandals - Who decided this was okay in the first place? It is understandable that when it is chilly outside we all dream of the warmth of the hot sun, but wearing socks with sandals doesn't make the seasons change any faster;

spotting novelty ties, shirts, boxer shorts, etc.- There is nothing lasting about novelty clothing nor does it project a stylish, put together image. Leave the smiley faces, hearts, reindeer, shamrocks, animal and various other prints on the racks of the store where you found them;

blaring designer labels - Who says it is chic to be a loud walking advertisement for designers. It's not a sophisticated look. Just because you are wearing a designer's name on your chest, sleeve, or wherever, doesn't make you stylish. Keep it understated and simple;

parading in chunky shoes - These were okay back in the 90s, but the big chunky shoes, especially those with square toes, should be retired at this point. Choose something classic that stands the test of time;

shiny or glittery shirts and suits - If you are looking for something to go out nightclubbing in, think of much better choices than those that are glittery, shiny and ultimately tacky. If you are at a loss, try a form fitting black T-shirt or black dress shirt, which can be worn with jeans or trousers and dress shoes or casual shoes.
clothes that are too loose fitting - In a word, sloppy. Unless you are a hip-hop artist, it's not the right look. The male models choose clothes that fit your body. This might take some experimentation by mixing and matching certain cuts and styles until you find the right fit for your body that is flattering;

unflattering colours - The colours you wear should compliment your natural features such as your eye colour, skin tone and body shape. Keep this in mind when putting your look together. French blue is always a good choice. French blue, which is a rich medium blue, is a flattering colour for most skin tones. It makes a great dress shirt, which is mainly where you will find this sumptuous hue;

stay away from bright, solid-coloured socks - Colourful socks are okay if they have a design like stripes or argyle. But bright, solid-coloured socks are simply not a good idea;

donning loud patterns - They are distracting and ultimately not a good thing. If it was ever in, it was the 80s, but we've thankfully moved on;

ties are great way to express yourself - but keeping it tasteful is your best bet. You can't go wrong with diagonal stripes, modern polka-dots, plaids and subtle patterns. Just make sure your tie compliments your shirt, suit, sweater or whatever you will be wearing it with. Novelty ties are best avoided since the novelty is short lived;

always match your belt with your shoes - This is a good rule to follow and it keeps things simple while becoming male model style. It's best to stay with traditional colors such as black, dark brown or a rich tan. Other colours will be difficult to match, and generally speaking, should be avoided.

Models prepare for November 23 fashion show

The 15 models for Manning's "Fashion Show for the Holidays" have been busy getting outfitted for the Sunday, November 23, show at 2 p.m. in the Manning High School Auditorium.

Proceeds from the show will go to Manning's 2008 Weihnachtsfest Christmas celebration, set for Friday, November 28.

Manning area volunteers will model fashions including male models and female models, from B's on the Square, Harlan. Models include Karen Kienast, Debbie Janssen, Linda Stoeher, Jean Behrens, Joni Kienast, Nikki Sorensen, Steph Rosonke, Sarah Lorenzen, Roxi Doyel, Kasie Sanford, Mary Sailer, Toni Boyle, Shelby Hansen, Imelda Langel, and Terri Johnson.

They will model more than 30 complete outfits in sizes 2-24. Jackets, shoes, jewelry, and handbags will compliment the selections. The styles will include casual wear, holiday fashions, and "glitzier" outfits for New Year's Eve.

Musical entertainment coordinated by IKM-Manning vocal instructor Elizabeth Book will be provided by cousins Brad and Tyler Muhlbauer, juniors at IKM-Manning High School.

Door prizes have been donated by Lori's Flowers, Body Specialist Becky Gordon, Mary Sailer, Generations, Upper Cut, Mane Design, B's on the Square, and the Manning Chamber of Commerce.

Refreshments will follow the fashions.

Advance tickets are $10 at Generations, Templeton Savings Bank, First National Bank, Bank of the West, Manning Pharmacy, Manning Monitor or from committee members Denise Doyel, Laurie Stein, Jodi Hiatt, Dawn Lorenzen, and Nancy Stammer.

At the door, the tickets will sell for $12.

The Boot That Plans A March Into Men Model Fashion

To the horror of many fashionistas, Ugg boots have become an unlikely high street phenomenon thanks in part to celebrity endorsement by the likes of Kate Moss, Uma Thurman and Sarah Jessica Parker.

But now the American firm behind the craze for sheepskin is setting out to convince the nation's men that there is an Ugg boot for them too, with Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, Harvey Keitel and Ronnie Wood, plus a selection of Chelsea footballers, reportedly blazing a trail that the less style-conscious might fear to tread.

If successful, it would take the boots full circle to their origins as the footwear of choice for that most manly of men and for male model, the Australian sheep-shearer. Uggs, said to be an abbreviation of ugly, were also used by early aviators to keep their feet warm before being adopted by Aussie surfers emerging shivering from a long day on the waves in the 1970s.

Connie Rishwain, president of the US-owned firm Ugg Australia, admitted that convincing men to wear them may take some doing, but insisted the boot had a universal appeal. "It's a feelgood brand," she said. "We're all about comfort and luxury. And at a time when people might not be able to remodel their house or buy a new car, they can buy a pair of boots."

She said a launch of Ugg in Covent Garden would be attended by Chelsea footballers and their apparent endorsement would help open up a whole new market. "I pinch myself every time I see a pair on someone famous," Ms Rishwain added. "It helps that they are such a recognisable item too: it's so obviously an Ugg boot in those pictures."

Stefan Lindemann, the shopping editor of Grazia, said he thought Uggs would ultimately prove popular with men, although it might take time for the trend to catch on, because "men aren't as fashion-savvy as women".

He plans to go to the new Westfield shopping mall in White City, west London, this week to buy a pair. He added: "The classic Ugg boots are fun for the home and the beach but not for the town. They should be worn for surfing but not for London's streets."

But Uggs remain as divisive as Crocs, the plastic Canadian clogs despised and loved in equal measure. The editor of a men's magazine, who declined to be named for fear of potentially losing advertising, said of Uggs: "They are a monstrosity. They are like glorified slippers. You may as well shuffle down the street in your pyjamas and a pair of incontinence pants."
